The Power of Values: Knowing Yours (and Others)

At Pro-Development, we love to help both individuals and companies identify and explore their core values, we can then work with them to ensure that everyone lives by these values. It is a joy to work with an individual to help them clarify their own values and therefore lead themselves according to these (you can read more about that in Abi’s blog earlier this month) or an organisation who wants to identify and embed values to help them set their culture, to recruit people aligned to these values or ensure they work with clients who align to these values. We have worked hard on living and breathing our values from the day we set up in 2011 and know only too well the power and benefits that Values have brought to our business.

Values are so key to understand from a personal perspective too – knowing and understanding your own values and those you work and do life with too deepens and strengthens relationships.

Values are the fundamental beliefs that guide our actions, decisions, and interactions. They are the compass that points us in the right direction, shaping our character and defining our relationships. Understanding our own values and those of others is crucial for personal growth, professional success, and harmonious relationships.

Why Knowing Your Values Matters

  • Self-awareness: Understanding your values provides a clear picture of who you are and what truly matters to you. This self-awareness can help you make more aligned decisions and feel more fulfilled.
  • Decision-making: When faced with choices, your values can act as a filter, helping you weigh options and choose the path that is most consistent with your beliefs.
  • Purpose: Knowing your values can give your life a sense of purpose and direction. When you align your actions with what you truly believe in, you’re more likely to feel motivated and satisfied.
  • Authenticity: Living in accordance with your values helps you be more authentic and genuine in your relationships. When you’re true to yourself, you attract people who appreciate your authenticity.

We love how Michelle shares that learning about her values was one of the key reasons that led her to set up Pro-Development.  We might not even be here if she hadn’t done that work and realised her purpose and desire to live by those values through the work we do.

Understanding the Values of Others

  • Empathy: Recognising and understanding the values of others nurtures empathy and compassion. When you can see things from their perspective, you’re better equipped to build strong, supportive relationships.
  • Collaboration: Understanding the values of your colleagues or team members can improve collaboration and teamwork. When you know what motivates others, you can work together more effectively to achieve common goals.
  • Conflict resolution: Values can play a significant role in resolving conflicts. By understanding the underlying values that are driving disagreements, you can find common ground and work towards a mutually beneficial solution.
  • Effective communication: Knowing the values of others can help you communicate more effectively. By tailoring your message to their values, you’re more likely to be heard and understood.

How to Discover and Align Your Values

  • Reflection: Take time to reflect on your life experiences, beliefs, and aspirations. What truly matters to you? What are your priorities?
  • Values exercises: There are various exercises and tools available to help you identify your core values. In our workshops we use a values activity where we’ve seen ‘lightbulbs’ go off in people when they identify their core values.
  • Seek feedback: Ask trusted friends, family members, or mentors for their insights into your values. Their perspectives can provide valuable insights and helps to deepen your understanding of yourself too.

By understanding your own values and those of others, you can build stronger relationships, make more informed decisions, and live a more authentic and fulfilling life. Take the time to explore your values and align your actions with what truly matters to you.

Once you have clear values, it also can elevate you and your business to the next level.  One of the projects we love to work on is creating a Leadership Behaviours Framework to help both embed and bring those values to life – you can clearly use this to articulate what leadership looks like at every level of o your organisation against your values.  And, it makes a HUGE difference.

If you want to find out more about identifying your business or personal values, or creating a Leadership Behaviours Framework for your company we’d love to hear from you and catch up over a coffee, give us a call on 01904 628838 or email info@pro-development.co.uk we’d love to support you.
