The Power of Appreciation

In our ever-changing working environments, the importance of employee engagement cannot be underestimated. A key focus of nurturing engagement is creating a workplace culture where employees feel appreciated, valued and heard. A significant element of our employee engagement surveys reflects on appreciation, communication and recognition. As learning and development consultants, we understand the pivotal role that appreciation via effective feedback plays in shaping this culture.

The power of appreciation is a profound and positive force that can have a significant impact on individuals, workforces, teams, relationships and even an entire community.  Appreciation involves recognising and valuing qualities, efforts or contributions of others and expressing your gratitude to them.

Data from Oxford Dictionary…

appreciation (noun) · appreciations (plural noun)

Recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something:

“I smiled in appreciation” · “he had a fine appreciation of drawing”

Gratitude:

“they would be the first to show their appreciation”

As a learning and development consultant part of my role is to guide organisations to create an environment that values genuine appreciation.

There are many ways in which the power of appreciation can be transformative:

  1. Enhances relationships – Expressing genuine appreciation can strengthen relationships by building a sense of connection and mutual respect. It can create a positive and supportive environment which can lead to better communication and understanding.
  2. Boosts motivation and morale – When we feel appreciated for our efforts it can boost our morale and motivation. Knowing that our contributions have been recognised and valued can be inspirational in our continuous performance and progression. Appreciation can spur us on to be more productive and go beyond expectations.
  3. Improves well-being – giving and receiving appreciation can contribute to our over-all well-being. Recognition for our work or qualities can increase our feelings of self-worth and satisfaction. Gratitude can also bring a sense of fulfilment and happiness.
  4. Creates a positive culture – when there is a common practice of appreciation a positive culture is cultivated. This can lead to increased collaboration, creating and a sense of purpose among individuals and teams working towards common goals.
  5. Resolves conflict – appreciation can be a powerful tool in conflict. Acknowledging the perspectives and efforts of others, even in challenging situations, can create a foundation of trust, understanding and finding common ground.
  6. Personal Growth – when individuals receive developmental feedback that supports growth it enables a pathway to personal growth. Feedback of work or character that are valued help individuals to recognise their strengths and focus on areas of development and improvement.
  7. Strengthens Leadership – Effective leaders practice appreciation in their leadership skills. Recognition, praise and appreciation of their team members efforts builds trust, loyalty and respect, contributing to a positive and productive working environment.
  8. Encourages positive behaviour – appreciation can reinforce positive behaviours and actions can encourage a continuous engaging and positive behaviours.
  9. Spreads positivity – appreciation is contagious. When one person expresses gratitude, it can create a ripple effect, encouraging others to do the same.  This can cultivate a cycle of positive interactions and relationships.
  10. Builds resilience – in challenging times, the power of appreciation can be a course of strength. Knowing that others appreciate and support us can help build resilience and provide encouragement during difficult circumstances.

Remember to personalise feedback

Different individuals have different communication styles.  Understanding and adapting to these styles is crucial for effective feedback.  It is important to tailor feedback to individual’s preferences.  We use a feedback model and foster an environment where both positive and developmental feedback is regularly delivered so that we look forward to receiving feedback and growing in our roles.

Practicing and promoting appreciation can lead to positive outcomes and a more harmonious workplace which we include in all of our Inspiring Leaders Programmes, and we also run a number of one day workshops on Honest Conversations and Coaching.  Check out our website for future dates or contact us if you are interested.

Establishing open and two-way communication is essential for feedback to be effective.  Regular 1:1’s and check-ins provide employees with a platform to express their concerns, share achievements and seek guidance and is a valuable tool to support appreciation and build trust and respect.  Having a voice is the cornerstone of an engaged workforce.

If you are interested in providing an opportunity for your team to have a voice and offer feedback, then why not consider an employee engagement survey?  They are a great opportunity to let your team know how important and appreciated their views are and gives you an incredible insight into what they value and what you can do to help improve engagement and therefore productivity.

Get in touch to find out more or we can also offer you the opportunity to attend a FREE half day workshop on employee retention with our compliments!  How about that for the power of appreciation!
