Top leadership skills for teams in this new working world

In the new work environment and world, characterised by rapidly changing seasons and constant transformations, effective leadership skills are critical to guiding your team. We’re aware that things are tough for many right now, so here we talk about some top leadership skills that can help you navigate these challenges and foster success.

Lee has already shared some great tips on coaching through change that you won’t want to miss!

Whilst reading through the skills below, take a moment to bravely score yourself on each based on current skill level. Use a 1 – 10 scale, 10 being excellent. Your low numbers are the ones we’re here to support you with. It’s our Pro-Development mission to make a difference and get you scoring high in all areas.

  • Adaptability and FlexibilityLeaders must be adaptable and open to change themselves. Be able to embrace new technologies, methodologies, and ways of working. Able to demonstrate a willingness to adapt when necessary and to be able to encourage and support your team to do the same. Do you need to work on your mindset and resilience?
  • Clear CommunicationDuring times of change, communication becomes even more crucial. Oh, how many times do we hear this in feedback and employee engagement projects?! Communication is key, you can’t do enough! Be transparent about the reasons for change, the expected outcomes, and how it will impact the team. People who understand the why will engage quicker. Encourage open dialogue and listen actively to your team members’ concerns and feedback.
  • Empathy and Emotional IntelligenceShow empathy and understanding towards your team members’ emotions and concerns. Easier said than done and something we talk about a lot on our leadership programmes. Recognise that change can be stressful and that individuals may react differently, you must treat people as individuals. Build on and develop your emotional intelligence (EI) to connect with your team on a deeper level and support them through the transitions.  Much research highlights that EI is even more important than IQ from a leadership perspective.
  • Visionary ThinkingInspire your team by sharing a clear vision of the future, not just once, remember to communicate regularly. Help them understand the purpose behind the change and how it aligns with the organisation’s goals and objectives. A compelling vision can motivate your team to overcome challenges and embrace change positively. Here at Pro-Development we have a canny knack of honing and shaping vision and values with clients so get in touch if that kind of consultancy and coaching would help you and your team get clarity.
  • Resilience and PositivityAs a leader, you have a significant ripple effect, your attitude can greatly influence the team’s morale. Stay resilient in the face of obstacles and maintain a positive outlook and approach through whatever the business landscape, clients or your team throw at you! Encourage optimism and focus on the opportunities that change can bring.
  • Delegation and TrustDelegation is essential during times of change when tasks may be redistributed or redefined. Come on our one-day workshop on the Art of Delegation, dates throughout the year! Trust, oomph, we talk a lot about high performing teams needing to Trust and believe in their people. Trust your team members to take on new responsibilities and empower them to make decisions within their expertise. Help them to learn and build the trust.
  • Continuous LearningObviously we at Pro-Development believe this is massively important, it’s lifelong learning and we are always developing as leaders. Foster a culture of continuous learning within your team. Encourage skill development and offer resources to help your team members adapt to the changing demands of their roles. If you feel as though you’re not doing enough, we’ve loads of ideas, and not just using us, get in touch to find out more!
  • Conflict ResolutionDuring periods of change, conflicts may arise due to uncertainties or differences in opinions. Have those honest conversations, give the feedback, ask for feedback, and keep talking.  As a leader, be adept at resolving conflicts in a constructive manner, promoting understanding, and finding common ground. We can help train your team to have honest conversations in the moment, and we can help with building confidence and assertiveness – workshop dates in August and September.
  • Team BuildingAll our team building events are outcome focussed, doing the right thing at the right time with your people. Strengthen team dynamics by organising team-building activities and creating opportunities for collaboration. Building a strong team will help them navigate change more effectively and support each other.
  • Results OrientationKeep the focus on outcomes and results. Have you got a plan, a clear strategy, and objectives to meet – we can help you build something straight forward and easy to follow to keep you focussed on success. Coaching and consultancy around those help you maintain focus and hold you to account. Establish clear performance metrics and milestones to track progress during and after the transition.
  • Inclusivity and DiversityEmbrace diversity and inclusivity within your team. Different perspectives can bring valuable insights and innovative solutions during times of change.
  • Time ManagementEffective time and attention management is crucial during times of change to ensure that critical tasks are prioritized and completed on schedule and project shifts are managed.

Phew, that’s a lot, isn’t it?! No wonder it’s not so easy! By embodying these leadership skills, you can create a supportive environment for your team to thrive amidst change and restructure, ultimately driving success and growth in the new working world.

If you have scored yourself against these and got some low scores, give us a call and we can discuss how we can support your ongoing development. You are not alone!

We’d love to have a coaching conversation or talk to you about our experiential leadership development programme starting Sept. Get in touch to find out more and if you are in York, North Yorkshire, or East Riding there may be funding for you!
