How does Her Majesty the Queen knowledge share?

Not many of us are going to last at work as long as Her Majesty the Queen has and one of the things, we’ve been thinking about is how to retain all that knowledge in the organisation. She’s had an awesome reign and learnt a few things along the 70 years but how will she pass all that knowledge onto Charles, William, George, their families, and even future monarchs?

We’ve a hotline to the Palace (obviously Michelle and the Queen are good pals 😉 ) and we’ve asked the questions and here’s what we have learned, maybe some of this could work for you and your business…

Transferring knowledge, the YouTube way

No one wants to read long documents or processes and you don’t have to use YouTube, just make a simple video. A short sharp video, to the point, simple, consumable. We’ve heard that the Queen wears enterprise-connected smart glasses to record whilst she’s looking around the palace to record stories about artwork and artefacts.

Incentivise employees to learn from each other

Just like in the royal family you can imagine how; resentment runs both ways and it’s the same in businesses. Older workers might be irritated seeing younger workers moving in with new ideas and ways of working. Younger workers might begrudge the older generation for sticking around and delaying their chances for getting on in the business. Just like them it’s not happening overnight, the shift is gradual and in business much quicker than the Royal family! There’s a lot to be gained by offering incentives for them to spend time together sharing and learning. It’s a win-win as the knowledge transfer helps the company and you can get creative here.

Mentoring programmes

An obvious opportunity for the more experienced to spend time with others to develop them using mentoring skills. We’ve an ace mentoring workshop that we have developed and love nothing more than inspiring a mentoring culture just like the Queen has in the Palace.

Develop a searchable knowledge base

Yep, we are sure the Queen has one. Simple as the title says develop a database of knowledge in digital form that can be searched. Collect files, pdfs and processes and create a Wiki type resource.

Encourage story telling

Much less techie … imagine the 70 years of stories Her Majesty can share with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. I wonder what the younger Royals favourite stories are. Again, these stories could be videoed too.

Obviously, there’s training too. I bet Charles feels like he has been through a lifetime of training already!

A Knowledge Retention Strategy can keep employees’ workplace-acquired wisdom from walking out the door when they retire. How are you developing yours? Need some help, give the Queen a call or failing that, we are always here to help!!
