3 Peaks Challenge – 3rd Update

Our training is continuing and we now have less than a month to go! Here are the latest in our trials and tribulations!

Liz – did two very hot and painful runs in Murcia whilst on holiday. It was approx. 35 degrees everyday so the only possible way to run was to go out early morning before the sun got too hot! Nights weren’t an option because by the time the sun went down, too many gin and tonics had been consumed! She has also done a couple of gym sessions plus a 7 mile training walk with Michelle in the Howardian Hills. She has also purchased some walking trousers and a new ruck sack!

Michelle – has been busy in the gym plus swimming whilst on holiday at Center Parcs. Her new walking boots are now safely broken in with no blisters, result! As mentioned above, she has done a training walk with Liz, unfortunately having to spend too long looking at the map with long debates about direction as navigation and map reading are not their best skill! However Michelle did get them where they needed to be and came out as the top map reader of the day!

Sue – has purchased new walking boots – at long last!! She has tried walking uphill with them and her report back to us was “Boots OK, walking uphill not OK”! Oh dear! She thinks due to spending too much of her life in Hull, which is flat, her walking muscles have not developed. She hated the walk, and to quote her again “it was a painful and miserable experience and how anyone enjoys walking uphill is beyond me. I didn’t mind the downhill bit though and the two pints of pale ale at the end!”. She does make us laugh!

3 Peaks Challenge – 2nd update

OK, so our training is going slowly but surely! Not a massive amount has happened, certainly not as much as is on our training plan, but I can report the following exciting bits of progress!!

Liz – has broken in her boots and managed to get away with only one blister. She has done 2 biggish walks since the last update, one around Bishop Wilton which included a fairly large and steep hill, but unfortunately also included getting lost and walking 2 extra miles to find her way back. She is blaming it on her husband though, who had the map!

Michelle – has joined the gym and has bought new walking boots! So, she is busy on the treadmill and other complicated equipment plus trying out her new boots! Liz and Michelle had a business meeting whilst walking up and down a large hill 3 times, so that is also good stuff!

Sue – has also been to the gym and reported that she literally couldn’t get out of bed or walk the next day – but progress has been made nevertheless and she is now accepting that this walk is going to happen and isn’t in as much denial as she was at the last update!

Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge

Our Pro-Development Challenge; 3 women; 3 charities; 3 peaks

OK, so we’ve signed up for this, we’ve been given a training plan, we’ve chosen our charities, we’ve created a JustGiving team page ….. now all there is to do is ….. PANIC!!!! Aghhhh!

For those of you who don’t know what the Yorkshire Three Peaks is, here is a description :-

The Yorkshire Three Peaks is one of England’s greatest mountain challenge walks, and it truly is a challenge – 25 miles (40-km), 1,600m of ascent in 12 hours of walking (6 hours of which is uphill). This is a similar distance to a marathon, BUT with the added challenge of walking up three mountains. It is a demanding, strenuous walk that must be approached with preparation.

The Three Peaks are around the Settle area of the Yorkshire Dales and are called Pen y Ghent; Ingleborough and Whernside.

Update 1 – beginning the training

As I write this blog, to date, we have done the following training:-

Michelle– climbed Whernside on 3rd May and Pen-y-Ghent on 16th May.

Sue – bought a new lawn mower! No joke she hasn’t done any training yet hmmmm

Liz – climbed Pen-y-Ghent on Sunday 12/7/15

Liz said “I did this walk with my new walking boots, my husband and 12 year old son. I can honestly say I enjoyed it, on the whole, apart from the two sections of unexpected rock climbing which I definitely wasn’t prepared for. My son climbed up with no bother as if he was a monkey, no fear at all, in fact he said it was the best bit! My husband appeared to have no bother either, whereas I couldn’t look down, hung onto every rock like it was my lifeline and was just grateful I survived the experience once I was at the top. A lot of “manning up” or “womanning up” was going on I can assure you! My husband later admitted that he also had to “man up” and didn’t like the rock climbing bits. We deducted that as we get older, our sense of fear grows because you worry about “what could happen” rather than just getting on with it like a 12 year old would. In the same way, I can’t go on really scary rollercoasters now-a-days, whereas when I was 15 I would go on anything!

We will keep this blog up to date for those of you who want to follow our progress as we make our way from gentle dog walks through to what is effectively a marathon with 3 mountains to climb! Look our for our tweets and newsletters!
